Unlike other electronic devices, stun guns are not measured in volts alone; they also use milliamps to determine their effectiveness. The higher the voltage, the stronger the shock upon contact with an individual’s body. However, what truly incapacitates someone is not just high voltage but sufficient amperage as well. Amperage measures how much current flows through a person’s body upon contact with an electric shock.

To clarify, voltage refers to the electrical potential difference between two points and represents the force pushing electrons through a circuit. A typical stun gun delivers around 10,000 volts, which sounds daunting but doesn’t tell the whole story. Milliamps (mA), on the other hand, represent the current flowing through a person’s body upon contact with a stun gun. It is important to note that while high voltage helps penetrate clothing or create an intimidating arc, milliamps determine how much shock someone will feel. The milliamps, even in the highest volt stun range, are between 2 to 5 milliamps due to they are designed as a less lethal weapon, and higher amperage could do harm.

The amount of current flowing through the body is crucial in immobilizing an assailant. To measure this current flow in relation to stun guns and other electrical devices, another unit called microcoulombs (µC) comes into play. Microcoulombs represent a measure of electric charge equal to one-millionth of a coulomb, commonly used when discussing stun guns’ output. Stun guns often deliver an output ranging from 0.5 µC to 5 µC per discharge.

What Is the Legal Voltage for a Stun Gun?

As for a legal limitation of a high volt stun gun, there is very little regulation on the voltage produced or legal publications on a stun gun’s allowed maximum voltage. On the other hand, amperage is essential, and that is managed no matter how high the volts are of a stun gun. The maximum milliamps of a less lethal stun device is five milliamps. Milliamps above five could do damage and be lethal. In many US states, the legal limit for stun gun voltage ranges from 50,000 to 1 million volts. Suppose the state happens to regulate and publishes a maximum highest volts allowed for a stun gun. It’s important to note that higher voltages do not necessarily equate to enhanced effectiveness; they can often be misleading marketing tactics manufacturers use to exaggerate their model over the competition.

How Do Stun Guns Generate High Voltage?

The answer lies in the clever design of these self-defense devices, which utilize a step-up transformer to amplify the voltage from a relatively low source. Stun guns typically operate on battery, supplying power to an inverter circuit. This circuit converts the DC (direct current) from the battery into AC (alternating current), usually at frequencies between 20,000 and 50,000 hertz.

The AC output is then fed into a step-up transformer that consists of two coils wound around an iron core. One coil is connected to the primary winding and receives the input voltage from the inverter circuit. In contrast, the other coil is linked to the secondary winding, where high voltage is generated. The ratio of turns between these two coils determines how much voltage will be produced by the transformer. At the heart of a high-volt stun gun lies a step-up transformer, which generates the high voltage required to produce the spark between the stun gun probes.
